2007Crisp, dry, toast, smoke, citrus, hay, mineral, wild dark honey and Acacia flower -not a wimpy Sauvignon Blanc yet balanced with a full mid-palette and a dry finish. A very unique wine.

2006This wine is very aromatic with a lot of finesse. Cassis, cherry, cedar cigar box, hints of olive, pepper and mineral lift from the glass and as the wine has time to open up it reveals hints of butterscotch and bitter-sweet chocolate.

Founded in 2003, Lantz Cellars is a boutique winery located in the Snohomish area producing 450 cases of single varietal wines each year. It is entirely owned and operated by Kevin Lantz, who focuses on using traditional hand crafted methods. As little intervention as possible is used to create wines with complexity and depth, but with a well balanced and soft feminine quality.
Kevin is an engineer by day and a devoted winemaker by day and night. Although he does not have formal training or mentorship, Kevin is self taught by extensive reading of UC-Davis textbooks and numerous publications. He feels that a signature aspect of Lantz Cellars is use of his own methods and styles in performing the classic tasks of winemaking.
Currently, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are sourced under contract from Rattlesnake Hills, Columbia Valley, and Yakima Valley growers –some with over 30 years of experience. Grapes are always hand picked in the early morning and meticulously hand sorted and crushed immediately upon arrival at the winery with the help of dedicated volunteers.


Fermentation is started with the careful selection of yeast to complement the style of fruit a vineyard produces. This yields wines that retain their distinct varietal expression. The wines are seldom ever blended and vineyard lots are aged and bottled separately. Barrels, racking schedules and aging duration methods are used to build or soften each wine. Therefore, Lantz Cellars wines are an opportunity to taste single varietal wines produced from a single vineyard source.
When Kevin was 14 years old, he visited a winery for the first time. Inspired by the aromas of the cellar, he thought it was the most magnificent smell in the world. The impact of his first barrel room experience is still with him today as he relies on proven European barrels, but also experiments with several unique cooperages.
“A barrels’ contribution needs to integrate slowly into the wine to provide a framework of complexity and not stand out over the varietal’s fruit character. Oak forest selection, toasting style, barrel sizes, and barrel thickness are carefully chosen specifically for each, vineyard, variety, varietal clone, and fermentation method …these are part of what builds a great wine.”

Large format, 90 to 100 gallon barrels are used exclusively for Syrah. This provides new oak contributions to the wine and allows aging for 18 to 20 months without excess oaking. Thin stave Bordeaux barrels are used for Cabernet and Merlot. This seems to help develop softer tannins and contribute greater complexity instead of a “fruit bomb” wine.
Kevin’s plans are to slowly expand Lantz Cellars to a 3000 case per year facility and eventually operate the winery full time. “Controlled business growth, is imperative to maintaining quality and commitment to the customer”.
